DHAKA, Sept 01, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed has called for transforming the country’s universities into clean, healthy and environment-friendly ‘clean and green campuses’ alongside infrastructural development.

At the same time, he assured that the UGC would provide maximum support to ensure a conducive environment for education and research at the universities.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion held today marking the 23rd University Day of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed said, “The real development of a university does not mean merely constructing new buildings or infrastructure. Ensuring a clean, environment-friendly, safe and healthy environment for students, teachers and researchers is also an essential part of overall progress.”

Praising RUET’s existing peaceful and green environment, he urged the authorities to make the campus more well-planned and greener after completion of the ongoing development projects.

Highlighting the importance of quality education and good governance, the UGC chairman said the main objective of higher education should not be limited to awarding degrees. Students must be equipped with modern knowledge, as well as high ethical standards, human values and social responsibility, to become responsible citizens. To this end, he said, an environment of mutual respect, trust and tolerance between teachers and students must be maintained.

RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr S M Abdur Razzaq presided over the programme, while Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain spoke as the special guest.

Among others, deans of different faculties, teachers and students attended the programme.
