CHATTOGRAM, Feb 15, 2026 (BSS) – Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation Dr. Shahadat Hossain today said that the effective functioning of local government bodies is crucial for ensuring grassroots development across the country.

The CCC Mayor made the remark while addressing a meeting with visiting delegate of election observation mission of European Union (EU) at CCC Bhavan this morning.

EU’s long-term election observer Susanne Giendl and mission assistant Md Masuk Haider attended the meeting, among others.

Dr Shahadat said mayor alone cannot ensure desired services to the people of Chattogram like other big metropolis in absence of elected ward counselors and female counselors under reserved quota.

“That’s why election of local government bodies particularly the polls of all city corporations across the country has become an imperative to lessen the sufferings of city dwellers” he observed.

Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain told the EU mission members that BNP secured victory and got absolute majority in February 12 election enabling the party to form the government as it was a free and fair election with participation of significant number of voters.

EU election observer Susanne Giendle told the meeting that EU’s evaluation process of 13th parliamentary election was underway as per national legal structure and international standard. They have published primary report on February 14 in Dhaka.

“A detailed final report to be published after completion of entire election process with recommendations on further improvement of electoral process in the future” Susanne said.
