DHAKA, June 15, 2026 (BSS) – A Dhaka court today rejected the bail petition of economist and former chairman of Janata Bank Prof Abul Barkat in a murder case filed over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud during the July Uprising in 2024 in the city’s New Market area.

Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin rejected the bail petition after a hearing on the issue when Dr Barkat was produced before the court this morning.

On Sunday, another Metropolitan Magistrate Monirul Islam approved an application submitted by the investigating officer of the case to show Dr Barkat arrested in the case.

According to the case statement, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead on July 19, 2024, in the Nilkhet area under New Market Police Station during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Following the incident, Wadud’s brother-in-law Abdur Rob filed a murder case with New Market Police Station against 130 individuals, including Abul Barkat and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Barkat was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from Dhanmondi on July 10 last year.
