Govt to bear treatment costs of conjoined twins

DHAKA, Aug 10, 2026 (BSS) - The government will bear all expenses for the treatment of conjoined twin girls Zainab and Umme Kulsum, who are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Husain made the announcement on Monday night after visiting the twins at the hospital.

He said the decision was taken following a directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The Ministry of Health will cover the costs of the twins' surgery, subsequent treatment, follow-up care and other related medical expenses.

Earlier on Sunday, the health minister spoke to the twins' father, Nahid Hasan, and asked him to bring the children to Dhaka for treatment.

Zainab and Umme Kulsum, daughters of Nahid Hasan, a shop employee from Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, were born on May 4 at Dhaka hospital.
