DHAKA, Oct 16, 2024 (BSS)- The South Africa cricket team reached in Dhaka
today for two-match Test series against Bangladesh, a series which is the
part of the ICC World Test Championship.
This is the first time for the South Africa to visit Bangladesh for a Test
series since 2015.
Both the Tests in that series were drawn, due to rain and inclement weather.
The Proteas are the only other team barring India to have not lost any Test
against Bangladesh. They won 12 of the 14 Tests between the two teams.
Uncertainty hovering over the Proteas visit following the political change in
Bangladesh, but after security assurance, the team agreed to come.
They though have come with regular captain Temba Bavuma, the batter won't be
able to play the first Test due to an injury. Aiden Markham will lead the
side in the first Test.
Bavuma's absence in the opening Test means that no South African had any
experience to play Test cricket on Bangladesh soil.
The opening Test will be Shakib Al Hasan's last match in this format and it
also marks the beginning of Bangladesh team's new coach Phil Simmons who
arrived by the same flight with South Africa today.
Simmons, a former West Indies all-rounder, was named as Bangladesh coach
immediately for up to 2025 Champions Trophy after the BCB suspended Chandika
Hathurusingha on disciplinary ground.
Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium will host the first Test,
beginning on October 21 while the second Test will start in Chattogram from
October 29.
