LALMONIRHAT, Sept 20, 2024 (BSS) – Sujon Hossain, 23, a garment worker hailing from Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district was killed by members of law enforcement agency on August 5, as he joined a joyous procession following downfall of the autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina.
Sujon’s physically disabled father Shahidul Islam now stares at a bleak future at the death of his only breadwinner son. Sujon, being the only son, was the sole provider of the six-member family.
Sujon’s father, Shahidul could not hold back his tears as he recounted the tragic incident on August 5 when his only son Sujon Hossain was fatally shot dead on August 5, as he joined a joyous procession marking fall of the autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina.
He said Sujon was taken to the Gonoshastho Hospital by fellow people who joined the procession. However, he was declared dead by on-duty doctors. On August 6, as his dead body reached his village home, a pall of gloom descended on the village. Sujon was buried on the day following a namaz-e-janaza.
While visiting the house of Sujon this correspondent found that Sujon had been looking after a family of five – three sisters, his mother and physically-disabled father. To bear family expenses, Sujon started working at a garments factory in Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital.
Sujon’s grief-stricken father said, “Being physically disabled I cannot work and earn for the family now. My son, our sole breadwinner of the family was killed by policemen brutally in the July mass uprising. How will we run our family now?”
Local residents said the poor family members of Sujon are passing their days without food, since Sujon’s dead body arrived at the village home on August 6.
They said Sujon took up the responsibility of his family at a very early age. He even married off his elder sister. However, as they failed to give the dowry money, his sister was sent back home with a child.
The neighbours urged the government and the affluent people of the society to stand by family members of Sujan. They (family of Sujon ) urgently need financial assistance to maintain their life and livelihood, the neighbours said.
