DHAKA, Mar 11, 2026 (BSS) -A vessel carrying 58,457 metric tonnes of wheat from the United States has reached the outer anchorage of Mongla Port under a cash purchase agreement signed between the governments of Bangladesh and the United States.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Ministry of Food today.

According to the release, Bangladesh has already started importing wheat from the United States on a government-to-government (G2G) basis and all wheat imported under the agreement has now arrived in the country.

It said that under Contract-1, a total of 2,37,845 metric tonnes of wheat and under Contract-2, 2,30,039 metric tonnes have been imported, bringing the total to 4,67,884 metric tonnes.

The country's annual demand for wheat is around 70 lakh metric tonnes, while domestic production stands at around 10 lakh metric tonnes.

To meet the remaining demand, the government and private sector import wheat from abroad.

The release said the sampling and testing of the wheat have already been completed and necessary measures have been taken for its quick unloading.
