KHULNA, July 29, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator and Chairman of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Khulna City Unit Nazrul Islam Manju today said the city corporation is working to establish a sustainable waste management system and urged private organisations to complement the initiative for building a cleaner city.

Highlighting the importance of waste segregation at source, he said the introduction of compost production from organic waste would bring a transformative change to the city's waste management system.

He also called for collective public participation to develop a climate-resilient and clean urban environment.

Manju made the remarks while inaugurating a two-day training workshop titled "Climate Smart Circular Waste Management Business Plan and Compost Preparation" at the CSS Ava Centre in Khulna this afternoon.

The workshop was organised under the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society's Climate-Resilient Kin Cities (3C) project.

The training featured both theoretical and practical sessions on climate-smart circular waste management, waste identification and segregation, composting techniques, preparation of waste management business plans, marketing and evaluation.

Participants also received hands-on training on compost chamber preparation, layering, quality control, compost collection and packaging.

The programme aims to enhance participants' capacity in climate-smart waste management, compost production from organic waste and circular economy practices, which are expected to contribute to environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management in Khulna.

The trainees later visited a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Centre.The sessions were conducted by 3C Project Central Project Manager Md. Mosleh Uddin and Gazipur Assistant Project Manager Md. Kamrul Hasan, while Khulna Assistant Project Manager Md. Abdul Majid coordinated the programme.

Among others, KCC Chief Waste Management Officer Engineer Md. Anisur Rahman, officials and supervisors of the Conservancy Department, secretaries of Wards 
21 and 22, members of Ward Disaster Management Committees (WDMCs), representatives of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Khulna City Unit, life members, youth volunteers, project officials and other stakeholders attended the workshop.

Earlier, Manju inspected mosquito control, cleanliness, drainage and waste management activities in different parts of the city as part of a dengue and chikungunya awareness campaign.

He visited Dilkhola Road, Mistripara Khalpar Road, Islampur Road, PTI intersection, Ahsan Ahmed Road, Mistripara Market and adjoining areas before inspecting drainage and development works at Miapara Central Jame Mosque Road.
