July Uprising fruit of BNP's 17-year democratic struggle: Shamim

CHATTOGRAM, Aug 4, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram divisional organizing secretary of BNP Mahbuber Rahman Shamim today said the July Uprising was the culmination of the party's 17-year-long movement to restore democracy, protect people's rights and resist authoritarian rule.

He made the remarks at a pre-rally programme organized by the Chattogram Metropolitan BNP and its associate bodies to mark the second anniversary of the July Uprising.

Shamim said Chhatra Dal played a significant role in the July-August movement in Chattogram, adding that Wasim Akram, a leader of Chittagong College Chhatra Dal, was the first martyr from the district during the movement.

He also said then BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman provided continuous guidance to party leaders and activists throughout the movement and called on people to remain united in the struggle to restore democracy.

The programme was chaired by Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Convener Ershad Ullah and moderated by Nazimur Rahman. BNP leaders Abu Sufian, MP, Saeed Al Noman, MP, and central executive committee member Shamsul Alam also addressed the gathering.
