KHULNA, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS) – Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju today said the July movement, which initially began as a campaign against the quota system and discrimination, later evolved into a mass uprising that culminated in the fall of an authoritarian regime.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking July Uprising Day 2026 at the KCC building.

Marking the day, the KCC also organised programmes, including a discussion, tribute ceremonies, cultural competitions and a prize-giving ceremony, highlighting the significance of the student-led mass movement that culminated in political change.

The KCC administrator said August 5 remains a significant day in the country's history as hundreds of students, workers and people from different walks of life sacrificed their lives in pursuit of a democratic and discrimination-free society.

Paying tribute to those who were killed and injured during the movement, Manju said the aspirations of those who participated in the uprising should be fulfilled through rebuilding the country's economy and establishing a new social order.

He also referred to the government's efforts to achieve those goals.

As part of the observance, the KCC organised drawing competitions for primary school students and essay competitions for secondary school students at the city hall.

Later, prizes were distributed among the winners.

The city was decorated with national flags and display panels featuring photographs depicting the July movement. Special prayers were also offered for the souls of those who lost their lives during the uprising.

Earlier, the KCC administrator, accompanied by city officials and employees, paid homage at the grave of Sheikh Md. Sakib Raihan before laying wreaths at the memorial.

The discussion was chaired by KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed.

Among others, Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, Secretary Md. Reza Rashid, Chief Revenue Officer Rahima Sultana Bushra and Executive Magistrate Abdullah Al Imran attended the programme as special guests.

Family members of martyr Sheikh Md. Sakib Raihan, KCC officials and employees, ward representatives and distinguished citizens of the city were also present.

Raihan's father, Md. Azizur Rahman, shared memories of his son during the programme.
