Wave of joy in Thakurgaon as Mirza Fakhrul elected President

THAKURGAON, Aug 20, 2026 (BSS) - A festive atmosphere has engulfed Thakurgaon, the home district of veteran politician Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, following his election as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. 

From serving as a municipality chairman to becoming the country's President, his four-decade-long political journey has sparked widespread celebrations, street processions and the distribution of sweets across the district. 

As the news sank in, pride resonated across Thakurgaon, with locals celebrating the remarkable trajectory of their native son from local municipal leadership to Bangabhaban.

In the presidential election held at the Jatiya Sangsad today, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominee Mirza Fakhrul secured 255 votes out of 343 cast, defeating opposition alliance candidate Col. (Retd.) Oli Ahmad, who bagged 88 votes. 

Shortly after the official declaration of results, party activists and residents took to the streets in celebration.

Sweets were distributed, victory rallies were staged, and jubilation broke out across various parts of the city. Local residents expressed immense pride.

Mirza Fakhrul's political career spans several pivotal roles-from grassroots activism and heading the district BNP unit to serving as a Member of Parliament and State Minister. 

He later held the key organizational positions of Acting Secretary General and Secretary General of the party before his election as President.
