DHAKA, Jan 1, 2026 (BSS)- BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman remained immersed in silent grief following the death of his mother former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. He has been spending his time in private reflection, performing prayers and reciting the Holy Quran.
The loss of his mother has left a profound void in Tarique Rahman's life. She was his greatest source of strength and his most trusted confidante. Even while abroad, her prayers, courage, and guidance were the primary inspirations for his journey. That sanctuary is now gone forever.
From this morning until late afternoon, he remained at House No. 196, adjacent to 'Firoza.' He woke early to recite the Quran and spent the day in continuous prayer, seeking divine mercy for Khaleda Zia during his supplications (Munajat).
Begum Khaleda Zia was not just a political leader; she was a devoted mother. Despite the harsh realities of politics, imprisonment, and illness, her concern for her son never wavered. While she took silent pride in his successes, she was also the steady hand that provided courage during times of danger. The realization that this support is no longer there has weighed heavily on Tarique Rahman's heart.
Atiqur Rahman Rumon, a member of the BNP Media Cell, stated that the Acting Chairman remained engaged in worship from Wednesday night until Thursday afternoon, praying for the salvation of the departed soul.
He added that many relatives visited the residence to offer their condolences. During these private family moments, Tarique Rahman reminisced about cherished memories of his mother. He became visibly emotional and grief-stricken as relatives sought to comfort him. Later, at approximately 4:30 pm, he left the residence for the Chairperson's office in Gulshan to attend to his duties in his personal chamber.
On Tuesday morning, when Begum Khaleda Zia's body was brought to House No. 196 from Evercare Hospital, Tarique Rahman was seen sitting by his mother's coffin, reciting the Holy Quran.
Throughout the funeral prayer (Janaza) and the burial process, the BNP Acting Chairman remained composed yet visibly devastated. He appeared "stone-cold with grief" at the emptiness left by his mother. After the burial was completed yesterday afternoon, he returned home with a heavy heart.
