15 get life term in Habiganj murder case

HABIGANJ, Oct 14, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced 15 people to life term imprisonment in connection with the murder of Jamaat activist Mohibur Rahman in Habiganj town in 2013.

Judge of District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Syed Md. Kaiser Mosharraf Yusuf delivered the verdict at around 12:30 pm in the presence of the accused.

The convicts are -- Awami League leader and vice-president of the district Krishak League Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury of Moka village under Kagapasha union in Baniachang upazila, his brother Shahidul Alam Afiq, Jahangir Alam, Sebul Mia, Rubel Mia, Shamim Mia, Shamsul Haque Sorful, Maksud Mia, Tara Mia, Ratika Das, Sayed Mia, Nahid Mia, Abdul Mukit, Shahjahan, and Alamgir Mia.

According to the case details, on the night of June 17, 2013, around 8 pm, Mohibur Rahman was called by his cousin Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury to the bank of a local pond, where he was later hacked with a lethal weapon. Locals rescued him and took him to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

The following day, the victim's brother Mujibur Rahman Chowdhury filed a murder case against 19 people, including Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury, with the local police station.

After a long investigation, the investigating officer submitted a charge sheet against the 19 accused in 2015. The court framed charges on August 10, 2017.

Following testimonies from 23 prosecution witnesses, the court today delivered the verdict, sentencing 15 of the accused to life imprisonment.

Public Prosecutor Advocate Golzar Khan confirmed the matter.
