PABNA, Dec 3, 2025 (BSS) - A case has been filed with Ishwardi Police Station in the district over the killing of eight puppies, which were allegedly tied in a sack and drowned in a pond.

Police have arrested the accused, Nishi Rahman, 38, wife of Small Farmers Foundation officer Hasanur Rahman Nayan, shortly after the case was lodged.

According to police, the case was filed by Ishwardi Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun  around 11.30 pm on Tuesday (December 2). The case has been recorded as Case No. 8, under Section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act 2019, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) ASM Abdun Noor of Ishwardi Police Station.

Following the filing, police conducted a night-long operation and arrested Nishi Rahman. Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pranab Kumar confirmed the arrest.

He said the accused was detained from the fourth floor of a house next to Rahimpur Girls School in Ishwardi Municipality around 1:30 am. She will be produced before the court upon completion of legal procedures.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Moniruzzaman said that Nishi’s husband, government officer Hasanur Rahman Nayan, was instructed in writing to vacate the gazetted quarters on Monday (December 1) due to the incident. The family moved out on Tuesday afternoon.

However, earlier on Tuesday afternoon, Nishi Rahman told reporters that the puppies were causing disturbance near the staircase of their residence. She claimed she placed them in a bag and left them near a tree, denying that she threw them into the pond. “I don’t know how they fell into the water,” she said.

A stray dog named Tom had lived near the Ishwardi UNO’s residence for a long time and gave birth to eight puppies about a week ago. On Monday morning, Tom was seen frantically searching for her missing puppies.
