Youth sentenced to life-term jail in Ctg yaba smuggling case

CHATTOGRAM, July 21, 2026 (BSS)- A court here today sentenced a fugitive accused to life imprisonment for his involvement in a Yaba tablets recovery case at Patenga Police Station in the city.

Additionally, he has been imposed a fine of Taka 50,000, in default, to suffer six-month more in jail. This ruling was delivered by the Fifth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Md. Tajul Islam.

The convicted was identified as Md. Sohel, 37, son of Md. Shafi of Dhurung area under Fatikchhari upazila. 

Court sources said that on June 1, 2019, Md. Sohel was subjected to a search due to his suspicious behavior at the APBN check post located near the VVIP entry gate of Shah Amanat International Airport. 

During the search, authorities recovered a total of 5,005 pieces of Yaba tablets from his school bag, as well as from his shoes and socks. 

Later, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md. Abul Kalam filed a case at Patenga Model Police Station as the plaintiff in this matter. Following the investigation, a charge-sheet was presented to the court. 

According to S M Kawsar Sagar, the court's bench assistant, the evidences presented by five witnesses substantiated the charges in the case, leading to the life imprisonment sentence for Md. Sohel under the Narcotics Control Act. 

Besides, the court mandated a fine of Taka 50,000, with an additional six months of non-commissioned imprisonment for failure to pay. 

Notably, the accused was not present in the court during the verdict, prompting the court to issue an arrest warrant against him based on the original sentence warrant.
