RANGPUR, Aug 25, 2026 (BSS) – The ongoing investigation into the murder of a four members of a family in Rangpur has been transferred from Kotwali police to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

“The investigation has been transferred to DB for a more intensive investigation into the case of four murders and speedy charge sheeting,” RpMP’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty told BSS here this afternoon.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the RpMP’s Detective Branch Inspector Md Zinnat Ali has been appointed as the new Investigation Officer (IO) of the gruesome murder case filed with the Kotwali police on Sunday.

The first IO of the case Inspector (Investigation) of Metropolitan Kotwali police station Milan Chatterjee came to the DB office and handed over the case documents to the new IO Md Zinnat Ali there on Monday afternoon.

Later, both the previous and new investigation officers visited the house of teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel in Machhuapara (the scene of the incident), under Ward No 24 of Rangpur City Corporation area.

The first investigation officer briefed the new investigation officer about the incident and findings so far during the ongoing investigation process.

Earlier, the two accused Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, had given confessional statements on Sunday night to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Md Rafiqul Islam for the quadruple murders under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

After recording the statements, the court sent the arrested accused Mugdha Das and Siddhartha Das of the city’s Machhuapara area to jail on Sunday night.

Talking to BSS, DC (DB) Sanatan Chakraborty said that the case has been handed over to the DB’s OC Inspector Jinnat Ali who has already started investigation into the case.

Earlier, Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, a retired teacher of Rangpur Zilla School, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola, 50, daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 25 and son Ayush Chakraborty Priyam, 12, were strangled to death at their house few days ago.

Police recovered the decomposed bodies on Saturday night and after the autopsy at the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue on Sunday evening, the bodies of the four were handed over to their relatives.

Later that night, the bodies were cremated at the Dakhiganj crematorium in the city.

Earlier, RpMP Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said that teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, along with his wife, only daughter and only son were killed when the teacher tried to stop the killers from consuming Yaba tablets on the roof of their house.
