Consensus Commission's second phase dialogue with political parties begins

DHAKA, June 17, 2025 (BSS) - The second round discussion of the National Consensus Commission with political parties began today aiming to finalise the recommendations of various reform commissions formed by the interim government, and prepare the July Charter.

The meeting officially started at 11:40 am at Foreign Service Academy here.

At the onset of the meeting, Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz in his opening remarks said, "Our effort is to make progress on some issues every day, and reach decisions, through which it will be easier to move forward in our work." 

He said the National Consensus Commission is determined that it would be able to prepare the July Charter by next July.

Expressing gratitude to the political parties for their cooperation, Prof Riaz hoped that if this process continues, it would be easier to achieve their desired goal. 

"We are trying to reach consensus on various issues, if not on all, then on a general issue. I repeat that it is not possible to agree on all issues, but our goal is to come to a place with some concessions for the nation and the state. The commission is observing this effort among all political parties," he said.

Prof Riaz said from structural point of view, they are trying to discuss some specific issues. "We have gathered here with the idea of reaching a stage through talks," he added.

Commission Members Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumder, Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman and Md. Ayub Mia and Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Monir Haider were present.

The meeting was also attended by BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council Member Ismail Zabiullah, Khilafat Majlis Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Abdul Quader, Jatiya Gano Front Central Committee Coordinator Tipu Biswas, Gonosanghati Andolon Central Committee Executive Coordinator Abul Hasan Rubel, AB Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad, National Citizens Party (NCP) Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr. Tasnim Zara, Labor Party Chairman Dr. Mustafizur Rahman Iran, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Dr. Redwan Ahmed, Bangladesh Liberal Democratic Party (BLDP) Chairman Shahadat Hossain Selim, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD General Secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmud Swapan and Dr. Mushtaq Hossain from Bangladesh JSD, among others.
