NEW YORK, Sept 26, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today stressed making the 'Loss and Damage Fund' fully operational to save the future generation from the adverse impacts of climate change.

"For the sake of our children's future, we must act now. The Loss and Damage Fund must be made fully operational," he said while addressing the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) here in the USA.

Prof Yunus said efforts to mitigate climate change must be intensified, but adaptation must be given equal priority.

Adaptation must be locally determined, locally led, and locally managed, he said, adding Bangladesh has already embraced locally led adaptation as a guiding principle.

"At the upcoming COP30 Conference, we will announce our third Nationally Determined Contribution, which will include both mitigation targets and adaptation actions, with special emphasis on protecting mangrove forests and restoring wetlands," Prof Yunus said.

At the same time, he said, Bangladesh expects the global community, particularly the high-emitting countries, to meet their responsibilities with sincerity.

The chief adviser said in confronting the climate crisis, the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius has already slipped beyond their grasp.

He said the annual pledge of US$ 100 billion in climate finance has not been met.

"Worse still, the small sums that are disbursed are often shown on paper as many times larger than what they really are. This is unacceptable," Prof Yunus added.
