4.1 magnitude earthquake jolts Dhaka, parts of Bangladesh

DHAKA, Dec 4, 2025 (BSS)- An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale jolted Dhaka and adjoining areas at 6:14 am today. 

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said the epicentre of the tremor was located in Shibpur of Narsingdi district, 38 kilometres off the capital.

European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the quake originated 33 kilometres east-northeast of Tongi in Gazipur and three kilometres north of Narsingdi, with a depth of 30 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

Earlier, on December 01 at 12:55 am, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake with epicentre in Minjin, Myanmar hit Bangladesh, shaking southeastern Port city Chattogram and different parts of the country.
 
Prior to that, on November 27 at 4:15:20 pm, a 3.6-magnitude earthquake shook Dhaka. BMD said the epicentre was located at Ghorashal in Palash upazila of Narsingdi. Earlier that dawn, two separate tremors were felt in Sylhet and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar.

In an earlier sequence, four earthquakes struck on November 21 and next day jolting Dhaka and its adjoining areas. 

The first tremor felt on November 21 morning measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre 25 kilometres from Dhaka at Madhabdi in Narsingdi at a depth of 10 kilometres. 

The November 21 quake left 10 people dead and more than 600 injured and caused damage to a number of buildings in the city. 

Most of the recent tremors recorded in the region had their epicentres in Narsingdi.
