DHAKA, Jan 5, 2026 (BSS) - Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said members of law enforcement agencies will be able to enter any place, including polling stations, during the upcoming national election to prevent sabotage, maintain law and order, and ensure a smooth voting process.

He made the remarks while briefing journalists after the 19th meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Law and Order at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Bangladesh Secretariat here.

The adviser said all law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been instructed to work more actively and in a coordinated manner at the field level throughout the election period.

The meeting directed authorities to take all necessary measures to maintain law and order during political programs and election campaigns and urged political parties and the public to comply with the election code of conduct.

Jahangir warned that law enforcement would take immediate action if roads are blocked or public suffering is caused, adding that no concessions would be made in such cases.

He said intelligence surveillance has been strengthened nationwide and coordination among agencies enhanced to keep the overall situation under control.

The adviser also said the final charge sheet in the murder case of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July uprising, will be submitted on January 7.

He urged the political parties to remain vigilant so that saboteurs or fascist elements do not infiltrate parties or exploit political rivalries.

Briefing on Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2, launched on December 13, 2025, Jahangir said 14,569 people were arrested up to January 4, 2026.

During the operation, law enforcement recovered 201 firearms, 1,541 rounds of bullets, 566 cartridges, 165 indigenous weapons, as well as grenades, mortar shells, gunpowder, fireworks and bomb-making materials.

Overall, 33,804 people have been arrested on cases and warrants during this period.

He said the number of check posts and patrols has been significantly increased to prevent terrorists and criminals from moving freely and to recover more illegal and looted weapons.

The meeting also advised drivers to be cautious in foggy weather, discussed preventing rumors and propaganda on social media, maintaining communal harmony, ensuring security along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border, curbing smuggling and drug trafficking, and maintaining peace in the hilly regions.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Ghani and Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, among others, were present at the briefing.
