Modi greets PM Tarique Rahman, wishes to work together

DHAKA, Feb 17, 2026 (BSS) – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his warm congratulations to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on his electoral victory and expressed his wish to work together for the well being of the two peoples.

“I extend my warmest congratulations to you (Rahman) on the victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party at the just concluded parliamentary elections in Bangladesh and on your appointment as the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh,” the Indian premier wrote.

Indian high commission in Dhaka released the letter where Modi wished new Bangladesh premier every success as he assumed the “high responsibilities of the office”.

“I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted bilateral relations, enhance regional cooperation and advance our common goals in wide-ranging areas of connectivity, trade, technology, education, skill development, energy, healthcareas well as culture and people to people exchanges,” he said.

Modi called Rahman’s victory a “testimony to the trust and confidence reposed by the people of Bangladesh in your leadership and their mandate for your vision to take the country forward on the path of peace, stability and prosperity”.

The Indian premier said “I take this opportunity to invite you, along with Dr. Zubaida Rahman and your daughter Zaima, on a visit to India at a mutually convenient time”.

“A warm welcome awaits you in India,” he wrote.

Modi also pointed out that India and Bangladesh shared a “deep-rooted friendship” based on common history, cultural bonds and shared aspirations” while the friendship.

“The strong convergence between our respective developmental priorities shall serve as a guiding principle for our future cooperation,” he added.

The Indian premier said that as two fast-growing economies and aspiring societies, India and Bangladesh could truly become catalysts for each other’s sustainable growth, security and prosperity.

New Bangladesh premier’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly, meanwhile, said Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met Rahman shortly after he was sworn in and handed him over a congratulatory letter from his Indian counterpart.

Shibly said Rahman and Birla also chatted for over 15 20 minutes when the Indian speaker greeted him and expected Delhi-Dhaka ties under his new government would grow further.
