SC stays ex-Addl AG Mehedi’s bail 

DHAKA, Nov 21, 2024 (BSS)- The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today stayed a High Court order that granted bail to former additional attorney general Mohammad Mehedi Hassan Chowdhury in a case lodged over a murder took place during the July-August mass uprising.

“Stay till filling of the regular leave petition,” said the order passed by the Appellate Division full bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed. 


The court came up with the order allowing a petition filed by the state challenging the High Court order.


Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman and additional attorney general Aneek Rushd Haque argued for the state plea while senior lawyer Joynul Abedin, Barrister Kaisar Kamal and Advocate Gazi Qamrul Islam Sazal stood for Supreme Court Bar Council. 


Senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna took part in the hearing for the former additional attorney general.


The High Court on November 19 granted bail to Chowdhury for six months.


Police detained Mohammad Mehedi Hassan Chowdhury while attempting to flee to India on September 20. Later he was shown arrested in the case.


Chowdhury resigned from his post on August 8.
