Health Adviser for more research on dementia

DHAKA, Nov 25, 2024 (BSS)- Health and Family Welfare Adviser Nurjahan Begum today said there should be more research on dementia as more than 11 lakh people are suffering from the disease in Bangladesh.

Actual information will help move forward to provide proper care and treatment to the patients, she said while addressing a seminar on dementia care here today.

Alzheimer Society of Bangladesh organised the seminar at the conference room of the Board of Investment (BOI) building in city’s Agargaon.

It is mentionable that dementia is a degenerative brain disease usually people suffer after the age of 65 leading to change of their intellect, memory and nature of personality.

Nurjahan said there is a clear need for more focus on dementia while the medical sector conducts research on various health topics.

The health adviser emphasized the importance of increasing public awareness about dementia as in lack of having any treatment awareness is the only remedy for the patients.

She however hoped that extensive research would help develop dementia treatment in future.

Alzheimer Society of Bangladesh secretary general Mohammad Azizul Haque presented the keynote paper of the seminar while Johns Hopkins University teacher Dr Halida Hanum Akther and Directorate General of Medical Education DG Dr Nazmul Hosain took part in the discussion chaired by National Skills Development Authority Executive Chairman Nasreen Afroz.
