Expatriate gets life imprisonment in drugs case

DHAKA, Jan 6, 2025 (BSS) - A special court here today convicted and sentenced
one Anik, an expatriate, to life imprisonment in a case lodged over his
attempt to smuggle 15,050 yaba tablets to the Saudi Arabia in 2023.

Judge Arunava Chakrabarti of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 pronounced the
verdict in presence of the convict and sent him back to jail with conviction
warrant. It also fined him Taka five lakh, or to suffer two more years behind
the bars, in default.

According to the case documents, Anik was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal
International Airport on January 16, 2023, before he could board a plane for
Dammam, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Security officials seized 15,050 yaba
tablets from his bag.

The next day, Inspector Azadul Islam Salam of the Department of Narcotics
Control filed the case with the Airport Police Station.
