Detectives arrest 3 with gold stolen from Simanta Sambhar

DHAKA, Jan 12, 2025 (BSS) - Detective Branch (DB) of police has unearthed the mystery of sensational theft at a gold shop in Simanta Sambhar Shopping Complex at Dhanmondi here, arresting three suspects with stolen gold ornaments.

The arrestees were identified as Md. Rubel (28), Shafiq alias Sohel (35) and Saddam Hossain (31).

The DB of Lalbagh Division conducted a series of raids from Thursday to Saturday and arrested the trio from Companiganj and Muradnagar areas of Cumilla district. 

During the raid, 50.8 tolas of stolen gold ornaments were recovered from their possessions.

M Nasirul Islam, Joint Commissioner of DB (South) revealed the information at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre here this morning.

"A total of three people involved in the theft were arrested by DB Police and according to their confessions, 50.8 tolas of stolen gold worth about Tk 70 lakh was recovered from their possessions," he said.

Intensive investigation and operation are continuing to arrest other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen gold ornaments, he added.

The theft occurred at the 'Crown Diamond and Jewelers' (Shop No. 014 and 015) showroom on the ground floor of the Simanta Sambhar Shopping Complex under Dhanmondi Model Police Station around 1:am on Friday (January 3, 2025).

The owner of the showroom, Kazi Akash, filed a case with the Dhanmondi Model Police Station.

According to the case statement, unknown thieves broke the lock of the showroom and entered inside and stole 159 tolas of various types of gold ornaments. The estimated value of the ornaments is Taka 2,50,28,800.

Following the case, the DB started an investigation to arrest those involved in the incident and recover the looted gold ornaments. 

The DB inspected the scene and collected video footages. 

After reviewing the video footage, they found that an organized gang of thieves entered the showroom by cutting the shutter in a novel way and escaped with gold ornaments in just eight minutes. 

Based on the images obtained in the video footage, technical analysis and other intelligence information, the DB police started conducting an operation on January 9. 

During the operation, a person named Md. Rubel (28) was taken into custody while he was on his way to Chattogram from Cox's Bazar. 

Based on his confession, a raid was conducted in the New Market area adjacent to Debidwar Bazar in Cumilla and Shafiq alias Sohel (36) was taken into custody. 

Later, based on the information provided by them, 28.14 tolas of stolen gold ornaments and 21.10 tolas of stolen gold ornaments were recovered from two jeweler shops in Companiganj Bazar under Muradnagar Police Station area of Cumilla district. 

At that time, another person named Saddam Hossain (31) was arrested from there.
