DHAKA, Jan 12, 2025 (BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today said roof gardening is a significant option for producing toxic-free safe food and fresh air.

"The people will be benefitted if all the city's roofs are transformed into gardens... It will reduce carbon emissions, control temperature, and improve the quality of air to a great extent," the adviser told a seminar titled "Importance of Roof Gardening in Eliminating Global Warming" which was held at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here.

Rizwana said, "Everyone can play a key role in protecting the environment if they take the initiative of setting up a roof garden on their respective roofs.

"The roof gardening also helps safeguard mental health and ensure food security along with maintaining the ecological balance of the environment," she added.

Mentioning that people are reluctant to make roof gardens fearing collapse of roofs, she said "It is a wrong concept rather, roof gardening is an effective solution to fight against global warming."

The government has taken various initiatives to expand roof gardening and enhance consciousness among people about the positive impact of gardening on rooftop.

Chaired by Motaleb Mashreki, President of Dhakar Shikor, an online-based service and social organization working on enlarging roof farming, the programme also was spoken, among others, by secretary of Greenwatch Mostafa Kamal Mojumder, Krishibid Dr. Mehedi Masud and a veteran of Roof Gardening Movement, Golam Haider.

Later, the adviser distributed saplings and prizes among the roof gardeners. The adviser also planted a tree on the JPC premises.
