MUNSHIGANJ, Jan 14, 2025 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today urged all, especially fishing net traders and manufacturers to play strong roles against the production of 'Current Jal' in the country.

“The problem of using current net cannot be solved by conducting raids or punishing anyone. The stakeholders including net traders and factory owners must play active roles to control it,” he said.

The adviser made the call while addressing a views-exchanging meeting with the district administration, law enforcement agencies, officials of the Fisheries Department, fishing net manufacturers and fishermen in the meeting room of the Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner's office as the chief guest.

Farida said fishermen are using current nets because those are cheap, light and convenient for transportation.

All types of fish, both small and large, are caught in this net, she said, adding that current nets are harmful as there is no control on the net size.

She underscored the need for fixing the net size by holding discussions with experts of the Department of Fisheries.

"We are proud that Bangladesh's hilsa is famous in the world. But it is very painful when we see that jatka (immature hilsa) is being caught through harmful current net," she said.

She called for raising awareness against producing and marketing the illegal current nets in the country.

With Munshiganj Deputy Commissioner Fatema Tul Zannat in the chair, the meeting was attended by Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharf Uddin Ahmed Choudhury as special guest.
