RANGPUR, Feb 22, 2025 (BSS) - The language movement is a historical event in
Bangladesh, which later inspired the war of independence to achieve the ultimate liberation
of the country.

“It is not possible to repay the debt of those who sacrificed lives for their mother tongue. As long as the Bengali language exists, the memory of the language soldiers will remain unfading," said Divisional Director (Local Government) Md. Abu Jafar.

He was addressing a discussion followed by reception programme for language soldiers and a
prize distribution organised by the district administration marking the ‘Shaheed Dibash and
the International Mother Language Day- 2025’ at the Central Shahid Minar premises here on
Friday night as the chief guest.

With Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal in the chair, language soldier
Mohammad Afzal, Rangpur Metropolitan Deputy Police Commissioner Md. Abdur Rashid,
Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Joynal Abedin addressed the event as special
guests.

Regarding the practice of Bengali language, Abu Jafar said that incorrect Bengali spelling and banners, posters and signboards written in English are still being used in many places
including hotels and restaurants, which is very sad.

“In addition to using Bengali language at all levels, parents should teach their children to
speak and write their own language correctly before learning another language for higher
education when necessary,” he said.

In his closing speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that the last of all movements that took
place in stages to get Bengali recognized as the state language was on February 21, 1952.

“This day, February 21, is very significant for us. No other nation except Bangalees has given lives for their mother language. That is why the Bengali language has received international recognition,” he said.

The language movement made the independence of 1971 and the mass uprising of the
students in July 2024 possible.

He emphasized the use of Bengali language at all levels and more research works on the
language.

At the end of the discussion, a reception was accorded to language movement soldier
Mohammad Afzal.

Later, prizes were distributed among the winners of drawing, writing and recitation
competitions and cultural programmes organized earlier to mark the day.
