No legal bar in resuming broadcast of Channel 1: lawyer

DHAKA, Feb 24, 2025 (BSS) – A lawyer defending the case of Channel 1 at the apex court has said at present there is no legal bar in resuming broadcast of Channel 1.

Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal said these as the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today granted a leave to appeal petition filed by Channel 1 Managing Director Md Giasuddin Al Mamun.

“The apex court also stayed the efficacy of a notice issued by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) for shutting down the broadcasting of the private television channel. Now there is no legal bar in resuming the broadcasting of Channel 1,” the senior lawyer said.

BTRC shut down the frequency of Channel 1 on April 27, 2010. The private television channel authorities have been claiming that the then government took the step out of political vengeance. 

The matter then came to the High Court and Appellate Division, respectively.
