OTTAWA, Mar 26, 2025 (BSS) – The Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa observed the Genocide Day on Tuesday with due solemnity.

High Commissioner Nahida Sobhan presided over a discussion on the occasion at High Commission auditorium, a press release of the high commission said.

The programme commenced with observance of a candle-lighting ceremony in honour of the martyrs who lost their lives on the night of March 25 and during nine-month War of Independence in 1971, and during the 2024 July Uprising. One-minute silence was also observed in memory of the martyrs.

Later, the message of Chief Adviser Professor Mohammad Yunus was read out.

In her speech, Nahida Sobhan emphasized the need for global recognition of the 1971 Bangladesh genocide. She also depicted the 2024 July Uprising as a continuation of the nation’s enduring struggle for dignity, emancipation and the rights of the people.

The program concluded with a special prayer for the departed souls of all martyrs of Bangladesh’s War of Independence and 2024 July Uprising and for the continued peace, progress and prosperity of the country and its people.
