DHAKA, April 22, 2025 (BSS) - The number of Chinese students enrolled at Dhaka University (DU) has doubled within a year.

In 2024, DU hosted nine Chinese students. That number has now increased to 18, all of whom are studying in the Bangla Department at the Institute of Modern Languages (IML), said a DU press release today.

The foreign students have been allotted residential accommodations at Sir P J Hartog International Hall.

The increase follows recent academic collaborations between DU and Chinese institutions.

Under Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed with Yunnan University, Yunnan Minzu University, and Beijing Foreign Studies University, DU will also send 18 of its students to China for higher studies this year.

The press release noted growing interest among Chinese nationals to study at DU, and mentioned that more Chinese universities are expected to sign MoUs with DU.

Previously, Dhaka University also signed MoUs with Peking University Cancer Hospital and Kunming Medical University to foster cooperation in advanced medical research and training.

The Chinese government has also proposed building a new residential hall for female students at DU to improve existing facilities.
