Prime accused in Rangpur suspected thief murder case held in Dhaka

RANGPUR, Dec 8, 2025 (BSS) - Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 on Sunday arrested the prime accused in the murder of a suspected motorcycle lifter in Rangpur from the Matikata Road area under Pallabi police station in Dhaka.

The arrestee is Md Hafizur Rahman, 55, son of late Abdul Hamid of Jalaidanga Pashchimpara village under Pirganj police station in Rangpur, said a press release.

According to the case statement, the victim Sohel Rana, 28, of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur, worked as a tractor driver. Hafizur and his accomplices allegedly detained him on suspicion of motorcycle theft on October 27, 2025.

After detention the accused also demanded ransom and allegedly forced Sohel to sign three blank non-judicial stamps before handing him over to the complainant.

Sohel Rana was critically injured, died at his home on October 29. His father lodged a murder case with Mithapukur police station the following day.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB-13's Rangpur Sadar Company and RAB-4's Mirpur Camp conducted the raid and arrested Hafizur Rahman.

He was later handed over to Mithapukur police station for legal action.
