KHULNA, April 23, 2025 (BSS) - The temporary suspension of 37 students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) was withdrawn, and the university's seven residential halls were reopened today.

The decision was taken during the 102nd emergency meeting of the university syndicate held this afternoon. The announcement was made in a notice signed by the university registrar, Md. Anisur Rahman Bhuiyan.

According to the notice, a previous emergency syndicate meeting (101st) held on April 14 had decided to resume all academic activities from May 4 and reopen the residential halls on May 2. However, the latest emergency syndicate meeting decided to reopen the halls today, instead of waiting until May 2.

On April 13, students began protests and a sit-in on campus, demanding the reopening of the residential halls.

On the night of April 14, a total of 37 students were temporarily suspended in an emergency syndicate meeting in connection with clashes that occurred on February 18 and 19. The issue was also forwarded to the university's student disciplinary committee for further action based on the investigation report, the notice added.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the University Grants Commission (UGC) visited KUET today to analyse the situation and review students' demands.
They assured the students that proper measures would be taken after reviewing the demands.

The three-member UGC team-comprising Dhaka University Professor Tanzimuddin Khan, BUET Professor Saidur Rahman, and Joint Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division Ahmed Shibli-arrived at KUET around 11am.

The delegation first spoke with students who were on hunger strike and tried to persuade them to end the strike.

Later, the delegation held a two-hour meeting with student representatives.
