DHAKA, June 18, 2025 (BSS) - The government is considering involving traffic police in the investigation of road accidents.

"Initiatives will be taken to involve traffic police in investigating road crashes in the coming days," said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing a two-day workshop aimed at enhancing the investigative skills of police personnel dealing with road accidents.

The DMP Commissioner said the traffic department is responsible for managing vehicular movement, while the crime department investigates road crashes.

"Therefore, the skills of police personnel must be enhanced so that they can conduct road accident investigations properly," he added.

Stressing the need for stricter enforcement of the existing laws of the country to prevent road mishaps, the DMP boss said, "We want strict implementation of the existing laws to check road crashes."

Sazzat also said that if the causes of road crashes are identified in an proper manner, it will play an effective role in reducing deaths caused by road mishaps.

The DMP Commissioner also said that preventing road crashes requires strict adherence to traffic rules by all road users, as violations such as exceeding speed limits, making sudden lane changes, and crossing roads indiscriminately significantly increase the risk of accidents.

Most road crashes in Dhaka city occur between midnight and morning when the roads are relatively empty, he said, calling upon relevant quarters to avoid political programmes on the roads to ease public sufferings.

"We have requested the top leaders of political parties to avoid political programmes on roads, as such programmes cause sufferings for common people," he said.

The international organization Global Road Safety Partnership is providing training to DMP officers through the two-day workshop at Hotel InterContinental in the capital.

Sixty police officers from different units of DMP participated in the workshop
