DHAKA, June 19, 2025 (BSS) - Speakers at a meeting today underlined the need
for taking data-driven road safety measures to contain road accidents.

The meeting on road safety situation data in Dhaka North area was jointly
organised by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Bloomberg Philanthropies
Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and Vital Strategies at DNCC
meeting room.

DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin spoke as the chief guest
while its Superintendent Engineer (Civil) Eng Khondoker Mahbub Alam spoke as
special guest.

Md. Abdul Wadud, initiative coordinator of BIGRS, Dhaka moderated the event
while Dr. Tanvir Ibn Ali, surveillance coordinator of BIGRS-Dhaka, presented
the findings from the 'Road Safety Situation Report at Dhaka North' based on
the analysis of police data.

"Out of 117 fatal crashes recorded by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in 2023
claimed 123 deaths-- 61 percent were pedestrians followed by 24 percent
motorcyclists. Buses and trucks were responsible for most of these deaths,"
Tanvir said, adding that six high-risk locations were also identified, which
claimed around one fifth of the total deaths within the DNCC area.

Ali emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of vulnerable road users
such as pedestrians and motorcyclists through a coordinated implementation of
road safety measures, especially enforcement and infrastructure changes
across the high-risk locations.
