DHAKA, June 21, 2025 (BSS)- Dhaka Medical College (DMC) has suspended all academic activities for indefinite period amid ongoing student protests. 

The authorities asked the students to vacate the dormitories by 12 noon tomorrow.

The decision was formally announced today through an official notice signed by DMC Principal, Professor Dr. Md. Kamrul Alam. 

According to the notice, the Academic Council convened an emergency meeting earlier in the day to address the ongoing deadlock resulting from students’ agitation to resolve the infrastructural crisis of the hostels and academic building of the DMC.

The Council acknowledged the students’ concerns and confirmed that it is actively working in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Directorate of Health Education to address the issues.

The principal said a number of steps were already taken in response to the demands of the students. It said that they recognized the students’ firm position regarding the timeline for seeing tangible progress. 

He said despite issuing multiple notices and offering alternative accommodation, the occupants did not vacate the 4th floor of the Dr. Fazle Rabbi Hostel which Public Works Department declared abandoned.

Lack of cooperation from the students in several batches has posed a serious risk to the safety of the students, it added.

The notice said as a continuation of the unrest, the students of newly admitted K-82 batch has either voluntarily or under external influence- boycotted their orientation program, which is a black chapter in the history of the college. 

“This boycott resulted in a complete halt to academic activities of the college,” it said adding that consequently, the planned visit by the Accreditation Council has been redirected to another medical college.

In light of these developments and as per the decision of the emergency Academic Council meeting, all academic activities for MBBS students have been suspended for indefinite period, effective from tomorrow. 

But, students participating in the professional MBBS exams, as well as international students were exempted from this order.
