DHAKA, Oct 25, 2025 (BSS) - Shireen Parveen Haque, head of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission, has said that strong political will is essential to ensure fair wages and dignity for domestic workers.

She made the remark while speaking at a shadow parliament on the protection of domestic workers' rights, jointly organized by the Debate for Democracy and Gonoshakkhorota Ovijan at the BFDC here today.

The commission Head said the appointment of an independent ombudsman would help establish accountability in this sector.

Shireen Parveen expressed hope that the future government would prioritize the appointment of an ombudsman and the formulation of a legal framework to safeguard domestic workers' rights.

She also stressed that the use of disrespectful terms such as "Bua" to refer to domestic workers should be avoided.

Bringing domestic workers under a registration system would contribute to their social recognition and the establishment of their rights, she added.

The event was supported by NETZ Bangladesh and Education Out Loud. Debate for Democracy Chairman Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron presided over the function.
