DHAKA, Oct 25, 2025 (BSS) - Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today put emphasis on ensuring care and protection of animals in zoos, saying "It is a moral responsibility of us".
"Proper care and protection of zoo animals must be ensured. Conservation of endangered species of animals should be prioritized to make a positive contribution to the animal kingdom," she said.
The Adviser made the remarks while speaking at a view-exchange meeting at the Interpretation Centre of Bangladesh National Zoo in Mirpur this afternoon, following her visit to the zoo.
Noting that the Bangladesh National Zoo is a valuable national asset reflecting the country's civilization, culture, and values, Farida said, "We want to build a zoo that will be beautiful, educational, and entertaining for all".
She also highlighted the behavior of visitors, saying that many often tease animals out of excitement.
The Adviser urged the zoo authorities to take effective measures to prevent such behavior and called upon visitors to be more aware and considerate.
About modernization, Farida said permanent solutions to the zoos' problems are not possible without modernization and informed that work is underway to implement the 'Bangladesh National Zoo and Rangpur Zoo Modernization Project'.
She further said that under the project, an allocation of Taka 40 crore has been provided to meet urgent needs of the zoos.
The adviser called for ensuring the full implementation of the Animal Welfare Act 2019 in all zoos.
Department of Livestock Services (DLS) Director General Dr Md Abu Sufiun presided over the programme while Bangladesh National Zoo Director Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukder, DLS Director Dr Md Bayzer Rahman and Central Poultry Farm Director Zinat Sultana were present at the event.
