DHAKA, Oct 31, 2025 (BSS) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that a faction has become intensely active in a bid to thwart the upcoming national parliamentary election.

He said, “We support the announcement of the interim government’s Chief Adviser, Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus, that the national election will be held in February 2026 and we want the election accordingly. But a faction is determined to subvert and delay the election. They are trying to mislead the public by various means and statements.”

Fakhrul made the remarks as the chief guest at a discussion marking the 53rd founding anniversary of Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), held at the National Press Club.

Mentioning BNP as the party of reform in the country’s politics, the veteran BNP leader said, “We want to state one thing very clearly — BNP is a party of reform. The party was born through reform. BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman brought back the multi-party democratic system from one-party rule. Newspapers that were shut down were reopened, and the basic rights of the people were established. He brought both political and economic reforms.”

“Subsequently, Begum Khaleda Zia transitioned the government system from the presidential form to the parliamentary form. After that, she incorporated the provision of the caretaker government into the constitution. Therefore, those who claim that the BNP does not want reform are misleading the nation,” he added.

About referendum, Fakhrul said, “We want to state clearly that there is no longer any opportunity to hold a referendum before the election. We have clearly stated that the referendum should take place on the day of the election itself.”

He mentioned forming a government with those who had been with the BNP in its movement and struggle. “We certainly want to form a government with our allies, with whom we have fought and worked together for a long 15 years. And we have stated a very clear intention — we want to form a national government after the election,” said Fakhrul.

Nagarik Oikya President Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, and Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju, among others, spoke at the event.
