RAJSHAHI, Nov 3, 2025 (BSS) - Tomorrow marks the 100th birth anniversary of legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak, one of the most influential figures in Bengali and Indian cinema.

Born in 1925 in the Miyapara area of Rajshahi city, Ghatak spent his childhood and early youth in this historic northern town before his family migrated to India following the partition in 1947.

He studied at Rajshahi Collegiate School and later at Rajshahi College, where his passion for literature, theatre and cinema began to take shape.

Ritwik Ghatak is celebrated for his timeless masterpieces that explored the pain of Partition, human resilience and social realities with poetic depth.

Among his most acclaimed works are Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-Capped Star), Komal Gandhar, Subarnarekha and Titas Ekti Nadir Naam (A River Called Titas). His films, marked by powerful storytelling and emotional intensity, continue to inspire filmmakers and cinephiles across generations.

Members of the Ritwik Ghatak Film Society in Rajshahi said various programmes, including film screenings and discussions, will be organised to pay tribute to the visionary director on his centenary.

Ahsan Kabir Liton, President of the society, said, "Ritwik Ghatak's years in Rajshahi played a formative role in shaping his creative vision. The city's environment, the Padma River and its rich cultural heritage left a lasting impression on his work."

The film society has been observing Ghatak's birth anniversary every year since 2009, celebrating his enduring legacy as a filmmaker, thinker and humanist whose art continues to speak to the struggles and hopes of humanity.
