DoE conducts drives to curb noise, air pollution across country

DHAKA, Nov 13, 2025 (BSS) – The Department of Environment (DoE) conducted separate mobile court drives today in Lalmonirhat, Sherpur and Kurigram districts in accordance with the Noise Pollution Control Rules, 2006 and the Air Pollution Control Rules, 2022.

During the anti–noise pollution drives, three mobile courts were conducted, resulting in filling of nine cases   and realising TK 11,000 as fine, a press release said.

A total of 14 hydraulic horns were seized and several vehicle drivers were issued warnings.

Under the Air Pollution Control Rules, 2022, another mobile court operation was carried out in Lalmonirhat district against air pollution caused by construction materials. 

In this operation, three cases were filed  and realized TK  5,000 as fine .
The owners of nearby establishments were cautioned and instructions were given to remove construction materials kept in open spaces immediately.

As part of the ongoing nationwide anti-pollution campaign, from January 2 to November 13, 2025, the Department of Environment conducted 1,838 mobile court drives across the country against excessive vehicular emissions, illegal brick kilns, air-polluting steel mills, noise pollution, improper waste discharge, poor solid waste management, lead and battery recycling factories, wetland filling, charcoal production and the open storage of construction materials.

Through these operations, a total of 4,647 cases were filed and fined TK 27 crore 21 lakh and TK 15,500 .

During the same period, 496 brick kiln chimneys were demolished and operations of those kilns were completely shut down.
 
In addition, 222 brick kilns were ordered to cease operations, and 138 kilns’ raw bricks were destroyed.

Furthermore, 28 illegal polythene manufacturing factories were sealed off with their utility connections disconnected, while electricity and service connections of  170 other establishments  cut off.

As part of enforcement activities, six individuals were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment, and 11 truckloads of lead and battery smelting equipment were confiscated from 13 factories, which were subsequently closed down.

The Department of Environment has reaffirmed its commitment to continue such drives in the future to ensure effective control of pollution and the conservation of the environment.
