
KHULNA, June 10, 2026 (BSS) - Khulna University (KU) is set to establish an advanced Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) aimed at enhancing research, innovation and technological development on the campus.
The facility will be set up under a sub-project titled "Establishing Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) to Strengthen the Innovation Potential of Khulna University," funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh through its Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) Project.
An inception workshop on the project was held at the conference room of the university's Central Research Laboratory on Tuesday, bringing together deans, discipline heads, directors, teachers and students.
Speakers at the workshop said the Fab Lab would provide a modern multidisciplinary platform for research and innovation, offering access to advanced fabrication technologies, specialised training and opportunities for transforming innovative ideas into practical solutions.
According to project officials, the laboratory will be equipped with more than 40 advanced machines and instruments, which are expected to play a key role in strengthening research capacity, fostering innovation and developing technical skills among students and researchers.
Addressing the inaugural session as chief guest, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Rezaul Karim said timely and effective implementation would be the project's biggest challenge.
He stressed the importance of ensuring visible progress and procuring modern, suitable equipment, expressing hope that the laboratory would significantly enhance the university's research and innovation capabilities.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid Khan and Treasurer Prof Dr Mohammad Nurunnabi joined the programme virtually as special guests.
The workshop was chaired by Sub-Project Manager Prof Dr Mohammad Mahbub Hossain, while Assistant Sub-Project Manager Prof Dr Mohammad Moniruzzaman presented the keynote paper.
Following the inaugural session, two technical sessions were held, focusing on the laboratory's prospective applications and innovation-driven research opportunities.
