JAHANGIRNAGAR UNIVERSITY, Aug 5, 2026 (BSS) - Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Kamrul Hasan today said the spirit of the July Uprising must be preserved through research, literature, music, drama, films and documentaries so that future generations can learn about the sacrifices made during the movement.

"No movement for national liberation can survive only through the memories of those who participated in it. To keep its ideals alive, the history of the movement must be documented through books, poems, stories, songs, dramas, films and documentaries," he said.

The VC made the remarks while addressing the unveiling ceremony of "Jagaran", a commemorative publication brought out by the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) marking the July Uprising.

Referring to the sacrifices of those killed during the uprising, Kamrul Hasan said the stories of the martyrs and the experiences of their families should be preserved for future generations. 

He recalled the story of martyr Shahriar Khan Anas, a tenth-grade science student of Ideal Academy in Gendaria of the capital, saying the teenager had written a poignant letter to his mother before joining the July Uprising, explaining that he could not remain at home while innocent people were being killed and injured on the streets.

"He believed that sacrificing his life while standing against injustice was more honourable than living in silence. Such stories have the power to inspire people to resist oppression," the VC said.

He said the sacrifices of martyrs, including Anas, Alif, Siam, Shraban Gazi and Safwan, should be documented so that future generations understand the price paid for justice and freedom.

Describing the JUCSU publication as a valuable historical document, Kamrul Hasan said, "Perhaps this book will not be widely read today. But after 20 or 30 years, when many of us are no longer here, it will serve as an important record of history and remind future generations of those who laid down their lives for the country."

Highlighting the role of culture in preserving history, he called for producing songs, literature and creative works that would keep the memories of the July Uprising alive.
