Sylhet road crash: Govt announces monetary aid for victims

SYLHET, Aug 08, 2026 (BSS) - The government has announced financial assistance of Tk five lakh for the family of each person killed and Tk one lakh for each injured persons in the deadly bus accident on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Osmaninagar.

The government will also provide Tk three lakh to those who have become disabled in the accident, Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said.

Earlier, the Minister visited the injured undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital this morning and inquired about the condition of the injured.

He also instructed the hospital authorities to ensure proper treatment for the injured.

Announcing the financial assistance, he said, "A prescribed form through the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has been provided to the hospital director. The concerned persons will receive the government grant after duly filling out and submitting the form."

The minister said instructions have been given to the concerned authorities to control vehicle speed and stop competitive driving to prevent road accidents on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. 

He also said monitoring would be strengthened to prevent reckless speeding and unnecessary competition among drivers.

On August 7 morning, nine people were killed in a head-on collision between two buses in the Kashikapan area of Osmaninagar on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway.
