KHULNA, Aug 16, 2026 (BSS) - Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury here on today said Bangladeshis are known as a nation of “fish and rice” and the country is one of the best in the world in terms of natural resources and scenic beauty. 

“The government is working to advance the country through proper management of water resources and development of canals and wetlands,” he made the remarks as the chief guest during the inauguration ceremony of the National Fisheries Week with the theme “A self-reliant country through silver fish, Bangladesh first.”

Jointly organized by the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Khulna District Administration, the Minister joined the discussion and award-giving ceremony as the chief guest at the conference room of the Khulna Deputy Commissioner’s office this morning.

Despite facing drought, floods, excessive rainfall and other natural adversities, Bangladesh produces a huge quantity of fruits and crops, he said.

The minister called upon farmers, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, fishermen and people from all walks of life to work together to achieve self-sufficiency in every sector.

“Imports must be reduced by increasing domestic production. In particular, we can meet the country’s demand for fish and also earn foreign currency by exporting fish after increasing production,” he said.

Roy Chowdhury urged all to move forward united with dreams, hopes and aspirations and build a prosperous, self-reliant and developed Bangladesh through collective efforts.

Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Billal Hossain Khan, Director of the Divisional Fisheries Office Md Jahangir Alam and Police Superintendent of the Range DIG Office Md Sajjadur Rahman Russell attended the event as special guests.

District Fisheries Officer Md Badruzzaman delivered the welcome address.
Officials of government and private organisations, fish farmers, fishermen, representatives of fish-exporting companies, and representatives of fish-feed producers and traders’ associations attended the programme.
The chief guest also handed over crests to two successful fish farmers in recognition of their contributions.

Earlier, a colourful procession was brought out from the Circuit House premises, led by the minister, marking the Fisheries Week.
