DHAKA, June 19, 2025 (BSS)- BNP Standing Committee member Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan today said the Awami League (AL) government during its rule has destroyed the country’s education system in a planned way.

“Schools were nationalized at rural level, but the teachers and students are not going to school. The education system was destroyed as part of its move to keep the nation uneducated,” he said.

“On the contrary, former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has made immense contribution for development of education. She introduced stipend for the students and the nation has enjoyed its benefit,” he said.

Moyeen was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of the Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at Dhaka University (DU) organized by the BNP leaned White Panel of the teachers.

Highlighting the education policy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the senior leader of BNP said research can be done on the thoughts and programmes of Ziaur Rahman on education.

“Ziaur Rahman had immense passion for education. Out of this passion, he arranged a river cruise on Hizbul Bahar Ship with the meritorious students,” he said.

Moyeen said many people opined that Ziaur Rahman floated his party from cantonment. But, he had taken multifaceted efforts to give the nation proper education, whereas the political party, which claimed to be a people centric party, wanted to keep the nation illiterate.

Mentioning that America has become a powerful country not for arms rather for education, he said if you prepare a list of 1000 best universities in the world, you will find 70/80 universities in America.

He said Ziaur Rahman was the first man who spoke for real education and thought about nuclear power.

“His contribution to the overall development of the country cannot be described. He took effective measures for the welfare of the country during his short span of time in power. There was no sector in the nation's life where Zia had no contribution,” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman had a master plan to make people self-reliant and he made great contributions to this respect.

“He (Ziaur Rahman) introduced pro-people education. He introduced a production oriented education system. He was a farsighted statesman,” he said.

DU While Panel President Dr Morshed Hasan Khan presided over the function while Prof Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman presented the keynote speech.

BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Media Cell Convener Dr Moudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel, among others, spoke on the occasion.
