DHAKA, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS)- BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said accountability must be restored in the banking and insurance sectors, which have developed under the influence of political party over the past 15-16 years.
"In the last 15-16 years, the ownership of banks and insurance companies has been granted based on party affiliation. As a result, there has been a lot of plunder during this time. Therefore, accountability must be brought back to the banking and insurance sectors. Just as no country can function without accountability," he said.
Khasru made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized at the Diploma Engineering Institute marking the 25th anniversary of Popular Life Insurance Company Limited.
Khasru called upon all insurance companies to focus on accountability, saying, "Issues of accountability are for the security of your policyholders and the security of your employees. To advance the company, everyone must be attentive to the areas."
Emphasizing the need for responsible behavior from all stakeholders, he said, "Just as everyone in a family has to be responsible, everyone must be responsible in this sector as well.”
“The company's management must be responsible, employees must be responsible, agents must be responsible, and most importantly the regulators must also be responsible,” he noted saying the ministry under which the insurance company operates must also be responsible."
Referring to what he called a grand festival of plunder during the tenure of the fascist Awami League government, he said, "Considering the insurance sector, the banking sector, and everything else in Bangladesh, what we have seen in recent times is a major, grand festival of plunder."
Many institutions have gone bankrupt due to this looting, he said.
"Only those who took money from the banks and insurance companies benefited. But these institutions have been ruined. Consequently, all the concerned individuals involved with these companies have suffered,” he observed.
