DHAKA, Jan 7, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury today said Begum Khaleda Zia spent the overwhelming majority of her political life in movements and struggles, making sacrifices for the country and its people.

"Khaleda Zia was in power for only a tiny fraction of her political life. The rest of the time she was on the streets, leading movements and making sacrifices. Through this, she instilled courage in the nation," he said.

Khasru was addressing a remembrance and prayer meeting for Begum Khaleda Zia organised by Zia Parishad at the National Press Club as the chief guest.

Zia Parishad Acting Chairman Dr Abdul Latif presided over the programme, while BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council Member Advocate Moazzem Hossain Alal attended as special guest.

Recalling her political role, Khasru said the nation would remember Begum Khaleda Zia forever for her sacrifices and courageous leadership. "She chose her country and her people above everything else. She shared the joys and sorrows of the nation and stood by the people at all times," he added.

He claimed that Begum Khaleda Zia was the only leader who never compromised even for a single day in her struggle against autocratic ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

Referring to the massive turnout at her funeral prayer, Khasru said the presence of millions of people at her janaza reflected the deep affection of the people for her. "Such a gathering does not happen ordinarily. People came driven by heartfelt love," he said.

Highlighting her contribution to social development, he said Begum Khaleda Zia introduced the Food for Education programme at a time when girls' school attendance was very low. "She introduced stipends and scholarships so that girls and poor children could go to school," he added.

Khasru said Begum Khaleda Zia carried forward the torch of democracy she received from Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and later handed it over to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. "Now the torchbearer is Tarique Rahman," he said.

Speaking about future plans, he urged party leaders and activists to work for implementing the outline provided by Tarique Rahman for the future of Bangladesh.

He also mentioned BNP's announced policies, including Family Card, Farmer's Card, creation of one crore jobs, and various social safety and development programmes.

"Every segment of society has been considered. Development must reach every citizen. Democracy should not remain limited to politics alone; it must also be ensured in the economy," he said.

Leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies, including Zia Parishad, along with supporters and well-wishers, attended the prayer meeting.
