Man gets 6-month jail for killing neighbour’s pet cat in Mohammadpur

DHAKA, Mar 11, 2026 (BSS) – A court here today convicted and sentenced one Akbar Hossain Shiblu to six months’ imprisonment in a case filed over killing the pet cat of his neighbour in the capital’s Mohammadpur area in 2025.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Alberuni Mi pronounced the judgment and also fined the convict Taka 10,000, in default of which he will have to serve one more month in jail.

According to the case documents, Monsur, a resident of a ninth-floor flat at Muktijoddha Tower, lost his cat on February 1, 2025. Later, after checking CCTV footage installed in the building, he saw his neighbour Shiblu kicking the cat repeatedly. When the cat lay motionless after the assault, Shiblu stomped on it to ensure its death.

Nafisa Nowrin Chowdhury, an activist of People for Animal Welfare, filed the case on February 5, 2025. The court framed charges against Akbar Hossain Shiblu on July 14, 2025. A total of four witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates.
