Bangladesh, Canada can work to promote eco-tourism: Dipen Dewan

DHAKA, April 21, 2026 (BSS) - Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan today said there are significant potential areas for Bangladesh and Canada to work jointly to promote eco-tourism in Bangladesh. 

“The two countries can also work on sustainable development and tackling climate change risks in the CHT region,” he said when a four-member delegation led by Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh paid a courtesy call on him at his ministry office in the Bangladesh Secretariat.

During the meeting, Dewan said that people of all ethnic communities in the CHT are living in harmony and equality. The government is working tirelessly to ensure delivery of all civic services to remote areas of the region, he added.
  
He also said that the government's commitment to strengthening the national economy under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Praising Canada’s long-standing support for the development of the CHT, the minister said Canada has always stood by Bangladesh as a trusted friend. He expressed his hope that Canada would further expand its cooperation in the areas such as environmental protection, afforestation, quality education, healthcare, sanitation and employment generation in the region.

Dewan also stressed the importance of bilateral partnership in establishing good governance, modernizing the tourism sector, addressing climate change challenges, and empowerment of the women community.

Canadian High Commissioner Ajit Singh highly appreciated Bangladesh’s socio-economic progress and assured continued support for the development of the hill tracts.

Political Counselor of Canadian High Commission in Dhaka Marcus Davis, First Secretary Joseph McIntosh, Development Advisor Farzana Sultana and senior officials of the CHT Ministry, were present at the meeting, among others.
